The African American Heritage Trail Committee is inviting the public to participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the installation of new interpretive signs along Alexandria's historic waterfront. These signs aim to shed light on the rich history of the African American community in Alexandria throughout the centuries. The ribbon cutting event will take place on Saturday, February 10 at 11 a.m. at the newly erected Fishtown sign in Founders Park, located at 351 N. Union St.

The African American Waterfront Heritage Trail consists of 11 signs and 2 orientation panels, all of which provide valuable insights into the past. These signs serve as a testament to the enduring legacy of the African American community in Alexandria and their contributions to the city's development.

In a press release, the Office of Historic Alexandria emphasized the importance of preserving and sharing the history of the city. Through their various museums, historic sites, archives, archaeology, tours, exhibits, and public programs, they aim to enrich the present and inspire the future. The African American Heritage Trail is a significant addition to their efforts, as it enhances the quality of life for residents and visitors, while also supporting the city's equity and inclusion initiatives.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will be followed by a reception in the Overlook Room (#325) on the third floor of the Torpedo Factory, located at 105 N. Union St. This gathering will provide an opportunity for attendees to engage further with the history and significance of the African American Waterfront Heritage Trail.
