City of Alexandria Police Chief Don Hayes will be leaving his position to pursue a new opportunity at the federal level. Effective February 9, Hayes will step down from his role, bringing an end to his nearly 44-year career with the Alexandria Police Department.
Hayes has been recognized as a capable leader and dedicated public servant during his time as Police Chief. City Manager James Parajon expressed his appreciation for Hayes' commitment to the department and the community, stating, "He built upon years of experience to lead APD through some challenging times including ever-increasing demand for services. We wish him well in his next endeavor."
Joining the Alexandria Police Department in 1981, Hayes steadily rose through the ranks, holding various positions of responsibility. He served as sergeant, overseeing community-oriented policing and internal investigations, and later achieved the rank of lieutenant, leading divisions such as special operations, information services, and public services. In 2013, Hayes was promoted to captain and took on the role of patrol commander, in addition to heading the parking enforcement, traffic, special events, and community relations divisions. In 2019, he was promoted to assistant chief, overseeing all aspects of the Police Department.
Reflecting on his time with the department, Chief Hayes expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community. He stated, "It's been an honor to dedicate my life to this community. I truly believe there is no greater calling than to serve on behalf of the people. Doing so alongside the men and women of this department for the past four decades has been my greatest accomplishment."
While Hayes' next opportunity has not been publicly announced, Assistant Chief Raul Pedroso will take on the role of Interim Chief upon Hayes' departure.
The departure of Chief Hayes marks the end of an era for the City of Alexandria's Police Department. With his vast experience and leadership, Hayes has left a lasting impact on the department and the community it serves. As the search for a new Police Chief begins, the City of Alexandria will look to build upon the foundation laid by Chief Hayes and continue its commitment to public safety and community engagement.
