The Alexandria Community Remembrance Project (ACRP) is set to unveil "Resolved: Never Again," a documentary directed by Robin Hamilton, on September 21, 2024. The film examines Alexandria's historical journey from its founding in 1749 through its involvement in the domestic slave trade and the lynchings of Joseph McCoy and Benjamin Thomas. It also highlights current efforts to address this past.

The documentary includes interviews with key figures such as Mayor Justin Wilson, former Police Chief Don Hayes, Sheriff Sean Casey, and descendants of Joseph McCoy. The premiere coincides with the second anniversary of the soil collection for McCoy and Thomas.

Gretchen Bulova, Director of the Office of Historic Alexandria and co-chair of ACRP, commented on the significance of the film: “This film is a testament to the power of truth-telling and the willingness to acknowledge the good and the bad in our shared history.”

Audrey Davis, who leads the Division of African American History and co-chairs ACRP, noted that many Alexandrians were unaware of significant historical events before ACRP was established in 2019.

Filmmaker Robin Hamilton remarked on how confronting difficult topics can lead to healing: “The subject matter is tough, but it also opens the door to healing, learning and reconciliation.” She highlighted how initiatives like EJI’s Remembrance Movement have influenced local communities.

Bulova emphasized that ongoing dialogues are crucial for community building: “The work we have done to date has established a multigenerational group of Alexandrians who are having hard conversations."

The event will be held at George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Alexandria. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with a screening at 7:00 p.m., followed by a panel discussion. There will also be a fundraising reception prior to these events.

Tickets range from $5 for students to various packages up to $250 that include additional perks. Proceeds will benefit ACRP’s programs aimed at fostering an inclusive community.
