The City of Alexandria is in the process of planting 275 new trees across the city to celebrate its 275th anniversary. The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services recently achieved a significant milestone by planting 100 trees aimed at reducing gaps in the city's tree canopy.
The project began with the first tree planted at Windmill Hill Park on April 6 during the City's Birthday Kick-off Event. This was followed by additional plantings during Earth Day and Arbor Day celebrations on April 13.
Funding for this initiative comes from the Stormwater Management Division through the Stormwater Utility Fee. The newly planted trees are expected to enhance water quality, decrease nutrient runoff, and absorb stormwater to help mitigate flooding issues.
Native tree species have been chosen to fill empty tree wells and provide shade along roadways. The project targets areas with high heat indexes for shade provision and aims to restore canopy cover in community spaces.
Staff from the Stormwater Management Division are collaborating with Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) Urban Forestry to select suitable locations for each tree and oversee project development.
To keep residents informed, a new webpage has been launched where people can learn more about this project. An interactive map is also available online to track all 275 trees being planted.
As part of celebrating Alexandria's 275th birthday, events will be held from April through September. These events aim to connect residents with the city's rich history while looking forward to its future development. More information is available at alexandriava.gov/ALX275.
