The City of Alexandria has issued a reminder to taxpayers regarding the due date for the first half of the 2024 real estate tax, refuse fee, and stormwater utility fee. These payments are required by June 17, 2024. The real estate tax rate for the calendar year 2024 is set at $1.135 per $100 of assessed value.
In contrast to the real estate tax, both the refuse fee and stormwater utility fee follow the City's fiscal year from July 1 through June 30. The initial half-year refuse fee stands at $250 per can, representing half of the annual $500 rate applicable for FY 2024 and FY 2025. Similarly, the first-half stormwater utility fee is $154.35 per Equivalent Residential Unit (ERU), which amounts to half of the yearly charge of $308.70 for FY 2024.
The second installment of these bills will be sent out in October 2024. At that time, while the refuse fee remains unchanged at $250 per can, there will be an increase in the stormwater utility fee to $162.05 per ERU.
Taxpayers received their bills in May 2024. Late payment penalties and interest will apply if payments are not made or postmarked by June 17. The penalty starts at five percent if paid by July 2 and increases to ten percent thereafter or a minimum of $10, whichever is greater.
For those seeking adjustments on their stormwater utility fees, appeals must be submitted by June 17 using forms available on Alexandria's website or at specified locations.
Virginia law does not permit waivers for taxes or associated penalties due to non-receipt or inability to pay a bill. Those who did not receive their bill should contact Alexandria’s Treasury Division promptly.
Payment options include online credit card or eCheck transactions via Alexandria's website or mail-in payments addressed to P.O. Box 34750 in Alexandria.
Eligible residents aged over 65 or those with permanent disabilities may qualify for relief under Alexandria’s Real Estate Tax Relief Program for Elderly and Disabled individuals, which now has increased income limits starting in calendar year 2024.
Military veterans with total service-connected disabilities may qualify for full exemption from real estate taxes on their primary residence within Alexandria.
Further details about various taxes and related inquiries can be accessed through specific city department contacts provided on official websites.
