The City of Alexandria is hosting a series of events to celebrate its rich history and cultural heritage. Among the highlights are two free concerts by the City of Alexandria Pipes and Drums, scheduled for July 11 and August 1 at Market Square. The band, known for its precision marching and innovative musical arrangements, invites attendees to enjoy the performances and interact with band members afterward.
A recent event at the Charles Houston Recreation Center honored civil rights activists with the dedication of a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial bench, sponsored by McArthur Myers. Mayor Justin Wilson presented a proclamation honoring Ira Robinson during the ceremony.
Upcoming activities include a community cookout on June 25 at 900 W. Glebe Rd., offering free food and entertainment for families. On June 26, Catherine Weinraub will present a lecture on the history of the Alexandria Fire Department at the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum.
Other notable events include yoga sessions on Carlyle’s Magnolia Terrace, trivia nights themed around First Ladies at Lee-Fendall House Museum, and various specialty tours exploring historical themes such as midwifery and botanical sciences inspired by Harry Potter.
The city also announced an Arts Enrichment Program for Youth Grant Program, funded by the American Rescue Fund Program for Alexandria. This initiative aims to support nonprofit organizations in developing arts programs for youth in local recreation centers.
Nominations are open for the Bernard “Ben” Brenman Archaeology in Alexandria Award, recognizing contributions to archaeological investigation and preservation in Alexandria.
Historic Alexandria encourages public support through donations to supplement city funding for its projects and educational programs.
