The City of Alexandria is hosting a series of events and activities in May and June 2024, focusing on history, community engagement, and cultural enrichment. On Memorial Day, VFW Post 609 and American Legion Post 24 will dedicate a plaque to honor Alexandrians who died in the Vietnam War. This event will take place at the City's Monument to its War Dead at Union Station.
A variety of community events are scheduled, including a Community Cookout at Southern Towers on May 21. The cookout aims to bring neighbors together with free food and activities for children. Michael Johnson and Officer Bennie Evans are available for more information.
The Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum will host several lectures, including "Remember the First Ladies" on May 21 featuring authors Diana Carlin, Anita McBride, and Nancy Kegan Smith. Another lecture by Nicholas Redding on May 22 will discuss historic preservation efforts in Maryland.
Walking tours exploring Civil War history and architecture are also planned. These include "Beyond the Battlefield" tours beginning at Lee-Fendall House and architectural tours starting from Carlyle House.
Gadsby’s Tavern Museum offers a sold-out specialty tour every Sunday in May as part of Preservation Month celebrations. Additionally, an exhibition honoring Lewis Cass White opens on May 25 at Fort Ward Museum.
In June, events continue with a D-Day commemoration organized by the Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee on June 2. Dr. Kim Bernard Holien will deliver a lecture about Patton's "Ghost Army" on June 6.
These events highlight Alexandria's commitment to preserving its rich history while fostering community connections through diverse programming.
