Historic Alexandria hosts events commemorating D-Day anniversary and Juneteenth celebrations

The Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee is organizing a D-Day commemoration event on June 2 to mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion. This free event at Market Square will include historical displays, reenactments, and activities for children.

Glavé & Holmes Architecture will present their Historic Structures Report on the Murray-Dick-Fawcett House via Zoom on June 6. The report aims to document the house's history and condition as part of a broader plan to develop it into a public heritage site.

Nominations are now open for the Bernard "Ben" Brenman Archaeology in Alexandria Award. Established by the Alexandria Archaeological Commission, this award honors contributions to archaeological research and preservation in Alexandria. Nominations close on July 5.

The Fort Ward Museum is hosting an exhibition honoring Lewis Cass White and his efforts to preserve Washington's defenses during the Civil War.

A community cookout is scheduled for May 29 at Andrew Adkins with free food and activities. Yoga classes paired with mocktails will be held monthly at Carlyle House Historic Park starting May 31 as a fundraiser for new museum exhibits.

The Lee-Fendall House will host a Civil War Living History Day on June 1, featuring tours and demonstrations about its history as a Union Army hospital. An annual D-Day lecture titled "How Patton’s ‘Ghost Army’ Beat Hitler" will take place on June 6 at The Lyceum, followed by an Irish music concert on June 7.

On June 8, various walking tours focusing on Civil War history and architecture will be available in Alexandria. Additionally, Carlyle House offers specialty tours exploring colonial herbs and spices.

A tour exploring American labor movements takes place at Lee-Fendall House Museum on June 9. Culture Queen will perform a Juneteenth Jubilee show at Beatley Central Library on June 14.

Trivia nights focusing on Black History start at Lee-Fendall House Museum from June 14 through August. A remembrance event at Douglass Cemetery is planned for June 15 along with other events including Tavern Game Night at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum.

Juneteenth celebrations are set for Market Square and Carlyle House Historic Park on June 19, offering storytelling, music performances, art activities, and more throughout the day.

In addition to these events, several commission meetings related to historic preservation are scheduled throughout early June across various locations in Alexandria.
