The Alexandria Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the Alexandria Police Department, is investigating the death of an inmate at the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center. The incident occurred early on February 26, when a deputy discovered an unresponsive inmate alone in his cell, showing signs of a medical emergency.

The deputy immediately sought assistance from the jail's medical staff and began life-saving measures. Medics from the Alexandria Fire Department also responded but were unable to revive the inmate, who was pronounced dead at 4:42 a.m.

The deceased has been identified as Ahntais Lucas, 39, from Fairfax County. He had been held at the facility since August 20, 2023.

Given that this is an in-custody death, "the Alexandria Police Department is conducting the death investigation," according to officials. Additionally, "the Sheriff’s Office will conduct a review of the incident to ensure all policies and procedures were followed."
