Rep. Don Beyer, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 8th district, shared his views on federal employment practices through a series of tweets. Beyer emphasized the importance of merit-based hiring and promotion within federal jobs, while expressing concerns over potential shifts towards political favoritism.

On January 23, 2025, Rep. Beyer highlighted the crucial roles played by federal workers: "America's federal workers perform safety inspections on our food and water. They are the first line of defense against epidemic and common illnesses alike. They provide care for our veterans. They deliver our mail. Replacing that with political cronyism would hurt everyone."

In another tweet posted shortly after, he discussed historical changes to federal employment systems: "We did not always have a merit-based system that saw federal employees hired and promoted based on performance and skill. Congress passed laws specifically to replace a spoils system that was rife with incompetence and corruption– which is what would ensue if Trump gets his way."

Further emphasizing bipartisan support for merit-based systems, Beyer stated: "Merit, not political allegiance, has been the core value for government hiring and advancement for over a century, through Democratic and Republican administrations. Our merit-based system has strong support with both parties in Congress today."
